Fijians fall short

The Fiji basketball teams were bundled out in the semifinals by Australia on Friday night in the Oceania Youth Championships at Churchill Centre in Melbourne.
The men were defeated 53-99 and the womens 20-92 which will now see both teams battle for the bronze medals.
Mataika Koyamainaivure was top scorer for Fiji with 13 points and eight rebounds while Maraia Naivaluvou bagged 15 points.
Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said they are impressed with the performances of the two teams.
“This was a great opportunity for these young players showcasing their talent and gaining experience competing with these big teams like New Zealand and Australia,” Puamau said.
“It was a good learning experience as well for the two teams.
“Fiji played a good game against Australia even the men’s team really gave Australia a good run.
“Everyone now will focus on the bronze medal playoff.”
Both teams will play Guam.
