Fiji to play USA side

THE Fiji women's basketball team will play a touring College team from the United States in August.

The match is part of the national side' preparations for the FIBA Oceania Basketball Championship in Wellington, New Zealand. Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Pumau said the match would be a perfect build-up for the national team. Puamau has named a squad of 21 players to prepare for the Oceania.

He will name his final 10 players in August.

"We will name our final team in August before the game against the Division One College team," Puamau said. "It is a good build-up for us prior to the Oceania event. "We know that in USA, basketball is their main game, so playing them will be a huge boost to us."

Puamau said it could also be an eye opener to young players who were eyeing overseas scholarships. "This is a good opportunity for young players to give their best shot and try to impress the touring coach. "Maybe they might offer a scholarship so I am just urging the young players to train hard now and prepare for the big game in August."

Meanwhile the men's basketball team had their first training session early in the morning. The team included Jese Sikivou, Johnny Seruvatu, Waymann Whippy, Isireli Vuetibau, Ulaisi Koroi, Ioane Naivalunua, Mataika Koyamanavure and Marcus Whippy.
