This features three news schools joining the tournament for the first time.

Top secondary schools basketball teams are battling out for top honors at the Tuckers Ice Cream Secondary Schools Championship that started this morning.

New comers into the championship includes Tilak High School, Jasper Williams and Saint Johns College.
“It’s been very competitive there’s a lot of excitement in the air and there’s a lot of tight games as well as other games where the new comers are developing so just a mix of everything really,” says Valerie Nainima, the Event Co-coordinator.

She adds they are also excited to see the increase in interest, talents and skills of the sport in Fiji.

“Just right now just the interest level of the development of the youngest in Fiji has grown significantly, our skills level has gone a bit better you know a little progress goes a long way.”

The Fiji Basketball association will be using the tournament as a development tool for the upcoming FIBA Oceania qualifiers in December.

“One of our goals is to use this as a developing tool for our U19 squad members to test themselves up, been practicing for about a month now. And also just to introduce basketball to the new comers”

The basketball championship ends on Thursday.
