Schools battle in basketball tourney

THE Tuckers Ice Cream Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship starts today in Suva.

With students vying to impress for the Fiji under-19 Oceania Championship, Basketball Fiji officials are anticipating a royal rumble among the schools.

The Suva schools will be represented by teams such as Later Day Saints College, Yat Sen Secondary School, Saint Joseph's Secondary School, Marist Brothers High School and Adi Cakobau School who will be tough to handle playing in front of home fans.

However, the West schools such as newcomers, Tilak High School, Ba Provincial, Xavier College and Natabua High School should not be left out of the equation.

Last year, Lautoka Central College featured in the U19 boys final.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said the West schools always brought a different taste to the competition.

"It's going to be tough than previous years, I believe all students are ready to play for the pride of their schools," he said.

"And also the Fiji U19 squad players will be hoping to impress so that they could be selected for the Oceania U19 championship."

The all boys schools from Tailevu, Queen Victoria School will also be out to prove its worth.

The competition starts at 9am today at Ed's Court in Raiwaqa and the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
