Hard Work Pays Off

BASKETBALL Fiji  launched the FIBA Oceania Logo as it counts down to the event to be held in Suva next month.

The logo which was designed by 20-year-old artist Alexander Charlton Fritz Peckham, an Information Technology student at the University of the South Pacific.

Minister for Youth and Sports Lt. Colonel Laisenia Tuitubou was the chief guest at the unveiling of the logo.

Peckham said yesterday was a day he was introduced to the whole world.

"It's a big honour and a huge achievement for me because the world is going to see my design now," the soft spoken lad from Logana, Bua in Vanua Levu said.

Peckham said hard work had paid off in full.

He said the design depicted the cultural identities of the participating countries that would be competing at the event in December at the Vodafone Arena.

He said it took him a couple of months to complete the artwork.

"I did not expect to win the competition," he said.

"I did a lot of research for a few months in trying to come up with the idea. I played basketball at high school and that helped me too and also understanding the participating teams," the former Marist Brothers High School student said.

He said there would be pressure on him after his first artwork had set an international standard.

Meanwhile, Tuitubou said he looked forward to the upcoming tournament on December 1-6.
