Hoops for Health Clinics hit Primary Schools

Repeating its good works, Basketball Fiji Hoops for Health Program is set to take Suva, Nadi and Lautoka once more but with a larger number of participants. Basketball Fiji’s Hoops for Health is a program that is funded by the Australian Sports Commission and FIBA Oceania, created for the sole purpose of increasing an awareness of NCD's using basketball as vehicle to promote healthy lifestyles and messages through mass participation.

Newly appointed National Basketball Development Assistant for BF Saula Koroi, has aligned the program to BF Strategic Plans and Annual Cooperate Plan with the goals in growing the base of players playing basketball and using the program to target specific groups and communities. "Reviewing the numbers from last year’s program and we know we can increase participation and have identified key areas where we would be able to achieve maximum dividends”. “We have well trained part time development officers who are not only equipped to teach these students the fundamentals of basketball but will help them understand the benefits of living healthy and how that can make them better athletes".

Basketball Fiji currently has 12 part time development officers located in Suva, Nadi and Lautoka and have formed strategic partnership with the Fiji National Sports Commission through their district officers stationed in Suva, Nadi, Lautoka and the North. A couple of notable names who have joined the Hoops for Health Program are National Reps Josaia Qalotaki, Ada Dansey, Leah Seru and Josifini Fifita who are active athletes that are part of the National Men's and Women's training squad preparing for the 2015 Pacific Games. 2012 National U19 Women’s Captain Grace Taito has also been hired on part time basis by the federation to improve and strengthen BF internal administrative functions and provide further support to the Hoops for Health Program.

Through the federations development officers, BF has integrated the Hoops for Health Program in Primary Schools in Suva with Stella Maris Primary School, Veiuto Primary School, Latter-Day Saints Primary School, Gospel Primary School, John Wesley Primary School, Assemblies of God Primary School, and St Agnes Primary School.

"We have had a great start to the Hoops for Health Clinics which has inspired me as the BF development officer to carry out our roles and responsibilities to a 'T'. The only challenges that we are facing is that some schools don't have the proper basketball infrastructure however the journey so far has been fun both for the children and for me", says Leah Seru.
