Mum’s a Hero Program

National Basketball Development Assistant, Saula Koroi, has done it again with the Hoops for Health Program. Saturday, March 14, at 7:30am there were a group of 50 women assembled at the LDS Chapel in Raiwaqa eagerly awaiting instruction to what this morning would have them do as all they knew was that it would be a morning that involved exercise. The “Mum’s a Hero” Program is established to increase middle-aged women’s awareness of NCD through learning the sport of basketball. Not only will this program boost their knowledge of healthy living, it will help them see the need to actually live by these standards as it will help them and their families. Calling his group of specialists together, Mr Koroi had a ventured plan set out for these women. With Mr Viliame Qio, Dietitian Specialist for Diabetes Fiji, as a voice of warning to what should and shouldn’t be eaten was a wake-up call to all those that were in attendance. “We need to change what we eat, what you feed your husband and your children. Do away with all the frying and increase your usage of colored vegetables and herbs that have smell because they increase the nutrition in your meals”, he says. Mrs Foki Vuetibau reported to having learnt how to feed her family. “I didn’t know that all this time I was poisoning them with what I had assumed were okay meals because that was what I was raised up with”, she concludes. Not only were these ladies educated on their eating habits but they were taken through a 20 minute aerobic session with USP Training Instructor, Emori Bakewa. With his sound system set up and the latest hits blaring in the hall, he walked the attendees through exercises that escalated their heart beat and made them sweat. He was followed by Basketball Fiji’s very own Hoops for Health Coaches, Leah Seru and Josifini Fifita, who helped them through basic basketball skills and a few games that were intertwined with NCD awareness activities. It was a sight to have all these middle-aged women so engrossed in the activities and then having them express satisfaction at the end of the program to a healthy breakfast that was prepared for them. The first ever “Mum’s a Hero” workshop was such a huge success that Mr Koroi was asked to host another event in the upcoming month. This Saturday, March 21st, the “Mum’s A Hero” Program will be hosted at Ed’s Court, Raiwaqa for the Mothers of the Raiwaqa Methodist Church. These workshops will be held twice a month, one at the LDS Chapel in Raiwai and the other at the courts in Raiwaqa.
