Raiwai Basketball Association starts a new format into their league competition this season.

The new format features primary school players playing for their respective schools.

Raiwai basketball development officer Kelevi Serukalou said most primary schools had declared their interest playing the sport from grassroot level this year and they had decided to organise such competition for them. Serukalou said this reflects how they wanted to play the sport and helped it to be recognised and develop to be a major sport in the country.

He said this would similar to the Kaji rugby tournament organized for rugby players at primary school level. He believed there would be great things in store for basketball in the country with the new plans being laid out for this season.

“Most primary schools had shown their interest in playing basketball and we had set Fridays to be their league day. It would start at the end of this month and we hoped it would be a successful one,” Serukalou said.

“After seeing the number of young players from the age of eight to 10 years old showing a lot of interest for the sport we decided to organize such competition for them. They would be representing their respective schools during the competition,” he said.

“This would be a bit similar to that of kaji rugby but it would primary schools basketball competitions. This is one of the new format and another way we could developed the sport from grass root level.”

Schools like Stella Marist, Vishnu Deo Primary School, John Wesley and some other schools which are yet to be confirmed.

“Right now we’re looking at nine schools to start off the competition and we hope more schools would join us from next year,” he added.

The primary schools basketball competition starts on February 27.
