More than just basketball

The five-day Post Shop Raiwaqa Easter Basketball championship that gets
underway today will have some interesting promotions from non
government organisations.

Committee member Mala Ravai said apart from the competition, there would also other

promotional and free giveaways to spectators and players at the Vodafone Arena.

Ravai said the theme for this year's Easter Championship was "More than just basketball™" and the members of the public. re welcome to watch the games with giveaways awaiting them. This year's tournament will be more than just basketball, NGO's such as the HIV and Aids,Womens Rights, Yellow Ribbon Campaign and Post Fiji will all be there during the tournament, he said.

There will be giveaways during the competition provided by Post Shop and Digicel Fiji. So not
only the players will be rewarded but spectators as well especially school kids.

Ravai said a total of 16 men's team and 8 women'™s team would take part in the competition with defending champion Vikings from Lautoka out to retain their title.

He said Vikins would be tested to the wire by teams like Veterans and Warriors of Raiwaqa and also last years finalist Freshmen would also be out to better their last years performance.

Defending Champions Vikings from Lautoka have confirmed their participation, they'll be accompanied by two other men's team and one women's team from the western association.

Other top teams that will be out to stamp their authority are top Raiwaqa teams in Veterans and Warriors who are pooled together in Pool Four.

The Vikings will be tested by the ever improving Bryceland in Pool One while the runner-up from last year's championship, Freshmen will be going through an uphill battle with Shaq, Bulldogs and Boston in Pool Two.

Ravai said the tournament would also serves as a trial for the men'™s team to the Oceania Games This tournament will feature Fiji's top basketball players nationally, it will also be a selection ground for the men's team to Saipan Oceania Games.

The winner for the men's category will receive $1000 while $800 for the women. The competition starts today at the Vodafone Arena at 5.30pm.
