2009 National Secondary Schools Championships

The National Secondary Schools Championships is scheduled to begin on Saturday 22nd August and end on Thurday 27th August. Forty four teams representing thirteen schools will be competiting in the U15, U17 and U19 grades for both boys and girls. Basketball Fiji is proud to have 5 new schools joining the 5 day championships and these schools are Monfort Boys Town (20 minutes drive out of Suva), Laucala Bay Secondary School (Suva), Ba Provincial (Lautoka), Indian College (Suva) and Korean School (Nadi). We anticipate that more than 550 students will be participating in the 5 day event.

The 2009 National Secondary Schools Championships will launch on Saturday 22nd August at the Vodafone Arena with an opening ceremony. The opening ceremony will have all teams dressed in their proper basketball attire and team uniforms. Prizes will be given to the best dressed teams. This will be followed by a HIV/AIDS clinics (Dunking Out Aids Program) and the University of the South Pacific fitness clinics. A 20 minute break will be given after the clinic before the pool games begin.

The Vodafone Arena and Eds court in Raiwaqa will be used as the games venues. This is due to the large number of teams partcipating in the event and Vodafone Arena only avaliable for 4 days. The U17 grades for both boys and girls will play their pool games at Eds court, Raiwaqa. The U17 grades were choosen due to the fact in this age group had the most number of teams. The U17 boys grade overall has the largest number of teams (10 teams) and U17 girls has 7 teams. Therefore it would be only logical to have these grades complete their round robin pool games at an alternative venue before the finals. All finals will be played at the Vodafone Arena.

An awards has been organised by the sub - committee after the tournament at Lambert Hall, Marist on Thursday 27th August from 7pm to 12pm.

Basketball Fiji looks forward to organising a competitve and structured tournament for everyone to enjoy.
