New sports to boost Games

Three new games have been included to the 2009 Digicel Paralympic Games.

This is due to the organiser's aim to make the event a household name in Fiji's sporting calendar.

The new games are basketball, dart and table tennis.

This was confirmed yesterday by the Sports Development Officer Saimoni Nainoca.

He said the main aim of introducing such sports is to help widen the knowledge of these children into other sporting fraternity.

“This is the first time after 25 years for such sports to be introduced and for mainstream schools to participate with the disabled in the tournament,” Nainoca said.

“It helps these special children enjoy and learn more about different sports and broaden their knowledge rather than concentrating on a sport.

“The more the sports, the more freedom given to the children to choose the sports they are interested on.”

He added that they were pleased with the Suva Primary School who gave their time to be part of the tournament and play along their disabled brothers and sisters.

“It is a special moment for us and the children because they have the chances to meet with other children who are not part of their society.”

Marcellin Primary School, Vatuwaqa Primary School and John Wesley Primary School took part with the special schools in the basketball tournament which ended yesterday.

Gospel School of the Deaf scooped both trophies in the girls and boys division after beating Hilton Special School 38-22 and John Wesley Primary School 29-2 respectively.
