Basketball resumes in January

Rainy weather stops the inaugural National Christmas Basketball Club Championship at the Multi Purpose Courts in Lautoka yesterday.

Organizers have postponed the event to early next month with the competition likely to be held in Suva. 20 teams had entered the one day championship however officials were forced to call off the event due to bad weather conditions. Fiji Basketball development officer Lai Puamau said it was unfortunate the bad weather had forced them to call off the games. Puamau said they went ahead with friendly games.

He said they had put the games on hold three times before calling it off. “The tournament organisers have decided to move the tournament to January two weeks before the school starts and its probably going to be hosted in Suva,” said Puamau.

“We had already played 28 games before we stopped the competition. Teams had to travel to Suva
and had we gone ahead with the tournament it would have carried us through to midnight. “We stopped the games
three times during the rain to wait for the court to clear up. Later we decided to have friendly games against teams that still wanted to play.”

Suva clubs Shaq Attack, Saints, Bryceland and Mighty Mights were among the top ranked teams alongside Lautoka’s Giants and Vikings.

The women had top teams like Golden Bati which featured National U-20 captain Britney Hazelman, Chosen and Wet Sea.

“We would like to thank our major sponsors Twisties and Crest for supporting us,” Puamau added.
