Boston hosts club tourney

Boston Basketball Club is the first club to organise a local tournament. The Raiwaqa-based club is hosting the Post Fiji Boston Basketball Championship on March 11-13. Eight teams have confirmed their registration after the tournament was confirmed to be staged on Wednesday afternoon. The winner of the men's category pockets $600 while the runner-up takes home $250. Losing semi-finalist bags $100 and the best player receives $50. For the women, winners get $400, runner-up wins $200, losing semi-finalist and the best player walks away with $50 each. Tournament organiser Eroni Cinavilakeba said the tournament would be one of the hotly-contested tournaments. He said they were looking at catering 16 teams for the men and six for the women. "This is going to be the first ever tournament we're hosting and also we'll be the first club to organise a tournament like this. We want to set the platform for other local clubs so we're taking one step ahead." Cinavilakeba said basketball was one of the most improved minor sports that rose to another level last year. "Our main aim is to revive the basketball competition in the country. Last year, it was a good year for basketball so now we want to take it further up a notch to where we left off last season," he said. Cinavilakeba thanked Post Fiji for coming on board to sponsor the tournament next month.
