Nainima, Tulo top the best

She is the lone Fijian trying to engrave her name in the sport she loves the most, in USA where basketball is famous. Valerie Nainima’s name has hit the headlines many times and again yesterday, the petite player engraved her name in the Fiji Sports Council top awards where she received the 2009 Sportswoman of the Year award. Nainima is currently studying at the South Carolina University where she ply’s her trade for the South Carolina Gamecocks team. Nainima was named alongside young weightlifting nominee Manueli Tulo as the sportsman of the year. Lawn bowling veteran, Ratish Lal was runners up to Tulo whilst young female lifter, Maria Liku received the runners up award for the Sportswoman of the year. Marist Brother’s High School pace man, Banuve Tabakaucoro got himself the National Male award with Table Tennis’ Caroline Li being recognised for her achievement where she received the National female award. In the Youth category, Sisari Davui of Paralympics received the Youth Male while Fiji Athlete’s Elenoa Sailosi received the Youth female award. In the team’s category, the National Kulawai Volleyball team was recognised for hoisting Fiji’s flag in the Federation of International Volleyball World Cup qualifiers where they went as far as the third round. They were also the first team from the South Pacific to have gone that far in the sport.
