Lau takes out provincial basketball tourney
THE Lau basketball team walked away with $400 after winning the men's and women's Raiwaqa Provincial Basketball Championship at Ed's Court over the weekend.
Laced with current and former national reps, Lau proved too strong in the final stages of the competition to beat its opponents and walk away as eventual winners.
The men's, team led by Fiji basketball development officer Laisiasa Puamau, national reps Eroni Cinavilakeba and Akuila Vosamalua, beat Kadavu 38-35 in an exciting dual.
The women's team defeated Tailevu 28-15 in the final.
Puamau, Cinavilakeba and Vosamalua had to fight hard at extra time to deny Kadavu. Both teams were locked at 34-all after the final whistle. Lau managed to score four goals within the extra five minutes.
Raiwaqa Basketball Association official Saula Koroi said they were impressed with the level of competition during the three-day tournament.
"We want to thank everyone that turned out," Koroi said.
