New challenge awaits

THE sky is the limit, work towards your goal and you'll gain success.

Those were the words of Tiyana Kainamoli, the Fiji girl's under-16 basketball captain to her teammates as they prepare for the FIBA Oceania Youth Three on Three Tournament in Australia.

The 13-year-old from Dravuni, Tailevu, said she was honoured to captain the first ever Fiji U16 3X3 team.

"I think it is a great honour to be chosen as captain of the team. It is a challenge for me as I have some roles to play to be a good role model in order to work together as a team to get a place in the competition," the Form Four student of Saint Joseph's Secondary School said.

"I have told my players that the sky is the limit. This is a great opportunity for us to gain experience and we are looking forward to it."

Kainamoli, daughter of former Fiji rep Peniasi Kainamoli, said her dad inspired her to achieve greater heights in her young basketball career. She was first introduced to the court at the tender age of seven.

"I want to thank my dad and family for their support. My dad has inspired me a lot and he always encourages me to work hard and be like him," the soft spoken Kainamoli said.

BSP Life Insurance has given $3000 to the team.

The tournament kicks-off on June 25-29.
