Opals star here to help

FORMER Australian Opals basketball rep Annie La Fleur is in the country to assist Basketball Fiji.

The Olympic silver medalist arrived into the country yesterday and assisted the men's basketball team during their training session at Ed's court in Raiwaqa last night.

La Fleur who is the FIBA Oceania Zone development manager will help Basketball Fiji evaluate its current development program.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said they would utilise La Fleur's expertise. "We are grateful to have Annie coming to assist us," Puamau said. "She has wealth of experience playing at the highest level so we will make use of every opportunity while she is here in Fiji."

La Fleur represented Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx in the Women's National Basketball Association. She won a silver for Australia at the 2000 Olympics and a bronze medal at the Women's World Championships in Berlin, Germany.

She's an experienced coach, having coached the Sydney Comets ABA Women last year. She was also the New South Wales Metro Womens under-18 assistant coach. Puamau said Basketball Fiji would benefit a lot from La Fleur's visit.

"It's a big opportunity to learn from her expertise playing at high level. We want her to look at our development program and give her evaluation."
