Sparks aims for title defence

THE Sparks basketball team is on track to defend the women's title in the Raiwaqa Super League competition. The defending champion thrashed their own development side Mystics 67-21 in round five competition yesterday at Ed's Court in Raiwaqa.

Team captain Lynn Koyamainavure said even though they have the core of the winning team from last year, the other teams pose a big threat. She said they are aiming to keep their unbeaten streak in the remaining four rounds.

"Competition is definitely harder compared to last year," Koyamainavure said. "We won the title in 2011, then lost it in 2012 but won it back last year and so that makes us the targets this year."

She said their players would have to step up and improve in every game to ensure they win back to back titles. "It's going to be tough but it's possible. "Even though we won by a big margin today, I feel we could have done better. "We have a young squad with an average age of 24 and we will need to keep improving in every game. "This week we missed a lot of training sessions because of the bad weather conditions faced nationwide but we aim to do much better in the next round."

Meanwhile, the Raiwaqa Masters continued to prove that age doesn't matter. The veterans of the sport in the community taught the younger players a lesson with a 28-19 win over the Mighty Mights.

Competition was still underway at Ed's Court when this edition went to press.
