Preparation for U19 Championships Well Underway With Livestats Training in Suva Fiji

Basketball Fiji together with FIBA Oceania and Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) ran a two day Live Stats work shop last week in preparation for the FIBA Oceania U19 Championship.  Basketball NSW’s statistics expert, Patricia Nicholls, travelled to Fiji to conduct the course where 20 participants took part.

After a day in the classroom learning the basics, the volunteers took to the courts of Raiwaqa Basketball Association to put what they had learnt into action. “It’s really interesting and gives us a whole other perspective to the game,” said participant Leah Seru. “Often we do not consider anything other than the score so this really gives all players a chance to assess their individual performances.”

The workshop was conducted as part of Basketball Fiji’s preparation toward hosting the FIBA Oceania U19 Championship in Suva later this year. Alongside the Live Stats, Basketball Fiji will look at holding refresher and other courses in benching and refereeing so as to ensure the best possible standard of officiating for the games.

On her return to Australia, Patricia Nicholls was very pleased with the outcome of the training session and was quick to praise the hard work that was put in by all the participants. "They were all very excited to be learning something new and when it was time to wrap things up on the first day at 3pm didn't want to go home so we all worked till well after 5pm" she said. "They picked it up fairly quickly and it was clear to me and each individual what their strenghts and weakness were and how working together was the key to making it successful". "I know they will do well during the Championships", Patricia said.

FIBA Oceania and the Fiji Basketball Federation would like to take this opportunity and thank Patricia for travelling to Suva on such short notice and working with the volunteers to prepare them for the U19 championships.
