Youth Squads Camp a big success

30 youth men and 30 youth women attended the NDP Youth Development Squad Camp at the Raiwaqa basketball court in Suva from the 7th to 18th January.  This squad program was the first of its kind for Basketball Fiji and started the NDP in a fine fashion.  The camp comprised one 2 1/2 hour session for each squad (men in the morning and women in the afternoon) each day Monday to Friday.  In addition to the introduction and development of basic basketball skills, the players were also introduced to team offence and defence concepts and principles.  The finall 1/2 hour of each session was spent educating the players on various general sport subjects such as fitness and strength, diet and nutrition, sports injuries, planning and home programs.  In the second week the fiinal two days of the camp were used for a mini-tournament, with each squad divided into 4 teams in a round robin competition on the Thursday and final play-offs on Friday.    Senior National Coaches, Paul Whippy (men) and Mike Whippy (women) attended and were amazed at the standard of play at the end of the camp.  In particular the physical play of the women players was a sight to behold.  The ages of the players varied between 14 and 18 with one female player being only 12 years of age.  The future of basketball in Fiji national teams looks very good with many player in both squad over 185cm (and some only 15 years old).  In addition to the development of players, several coaches also attended such a camp for the first time and showed good potential for future coaching roles in the NDP.  Coaches who attended included Alfred Schuster, Jamie Toro, Navi Naivalu, Peni Ratumaiyale, Mere Ritova and Poseci Moce.  The players performaces during the camp allowed for further identification for selection into the National Youth Squads for 2008.
