This is set to be history in the making for the sport in the country as this will be the first time for them to take part in such a major event. Fiji women's side came into the picture after world champs Australia got an automatic qualification.

Fiji is group in pool C along side world number four Brazil and number five Spain. Fiji is currently ranked 58.  "It will be much tougher and more demanding than the Pacific Games. We want to prepare them mentally because it is good to be in a big tournament. Everybody will be gunning for a place and this is the first time for us. We are not going to participate but to compete too," head coach Michael Whippy said.
On the other hand the Wellington Swish Team will tour Fiji on April 6th to 13th.  Fiji will play the Wellington Swish in three games on April 8th, 10th & 12th.
"We currently have 24 players and once we have been through that we will pick 12 and 3 non traveling reserves, " Whippy said.
Fiji Association of Sports & National Olympic Committee vice-president Atma Maharaj says that this was good for basketball in the country.
" For our girls it will be good exposure for them to play against and be able to compete against the best. Hopefully the learning outcome of this will be good for the players and girls and future basketball players in Fiji," Maharaj said.
Fiji will play Spain on June 9 and the following day take on Brazil.
