Freshmen on track

Freshmen are on track to qualify for the National U-22 Basketball Championship playoffs tomorrow at Ed Courts in Raiwaqa.

Led by inspirational national U-20 skipper Jese Sikivou they thumped Raiwai 74-16 and later Shaq Attack 49-22.

A total of 15 teams will take part in the national U22 tournament which started yesterday. The national tournament which involves eight men's and seven women's team is organized by Raiwaqa association with assistance from Fiji Basketball Association (FBA).

Yesterday the men's competition was played at the Pacific Regional School while Ed's court in Raiwaqa played host to the women's competition.

West Coast the lone western based side in the tournament did not have a happy outing. They lost both their matches firstly to Knicks 15-30 and later Mighty 16-37.

FBA development officer Laisiasa Puamau said the presence of a western team boosted the makeup of competition.

“It is good that a team from the west is participating. It adds a new dimension and style to the tournament,” he said.

The development officer said the likes of Mighty and Raiwai were also top contenders. Puamau added that both men's and women's playoffs will be played at the Ed Courts tomorrow.

This tournament has also set a perfect platform for FBA to select the national teams for the 2010 FIBA Oceania Youth tournament in New Caledonia. Oceania regions top guns Australia and New Zealand will take part of the tournament.
