Vikings stamp their mark

VIKINGS will be the team to beat in the Lautoka Basketball Association league competition this season. The Vikings team put on a solid performance in the knockout competition at the Lautoka Multi-purpose Courts yesterday. The side made a bright start to the season, winning both its matches in the men's and women's category. A total of six teams entered the knockout competition with three more teams expected to join the lea-gue competition, which starts next week. This is a good response for basketball which is regarded as a minor sport in the Sugar City. LBA executive Ilise-peci Korovou said they were overwhelmed with the interest shown by the clubs. She said interest was high because Lautoka will host the National Club Championship in December. "This is the first time that Lautoka will host a national club event," Korovou said. "We are thankful to Basketball Fiji for giving us the nod to host the event. "Today, we had Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Paumau helping the teams. "Our aim this season is to implement development programs. "Once these programs are implemented we hope to increase our player base in Lautoka." Clubs from Raiwaqa and Suva have shown interest in the national championship scheduled for December. The organisers are eyeing a 24 team tournament with 16 men's teams and eight women's teams. Korovou said the club games will begin from next week. In yesterday's results in the men's division Vikings beat Youngsters 40-30 and Cougars 54-17. In the women's match Vikings proved too strong for Young Divas winning 33-25. Zion, Bankstown and Waiyavi Sonics will join the competition next Saturday.
