Wong predicts bright future

BASKETBALL Fiji's assisting development officer Nicholas Wong is predicting a successful future for basketball after last year's great revival crusade. "We have had good turnouts, especially students. We had a positive turnout with the youths and we will continue with programs throughout this year," said Wong at the Ram Sami National Basketball Club Championship, hosted by the Raiwaqa Basketball Players Association. Basketball Fiji is aiming to use this as a build-up for the Easter challenge. "This will be the first of many tournaments to come," said Wong. Wong replaces Agnes Sokosoko and is eager to bring new ideas and further develop basketball in the area. Wong assists Basketball Fiji's development officer Laisasa Puamau and is looking forward to an exciting year. There is a lot that Basketball Fiji has planned for this year in terms of community and school development, Wong says. "We had great response last year. In tournaments and during training programs many youths either participated or helped out," he said. Basketball last year underwent a revival phase with many old basketball reps coming together at the illustrious Eds Court in Raiwaqa to support. With many turn of events and hard work, basketball is now alive and strong. "Youths have responded enthusiastically to participating in training programs and even help with clean-up campaigns. "With the help of Puamau, we will be holding many tournaments this year. One in particular is the Raiwaqa League Basketball tournament which will be kicking off soon. "This tournament is aimed at continuing throughout the year until the Lautoka Christmas challenge because basketball normally dies down after the Easter Games.
