Waidonu takes cup

WAIDONU are the new holders of the Tuvili Cinavi Trophy challenge after they beat former champions Barbarians 36-35 in the feature match of the Raiwaqa Basketball Players Association at Ed's Court yesterday. Barbarians had trailed Waidonu 32-26 as the game entered the last minute when former national rep Lai Puamau nailed a 3-pointer. But some good strong effort from the Nicholas Wong-led Waidonu saw them retake the lead in the dying seconds of the match. Puamau tried one last effort at the buzzer but was unsuccessful and allowed the Waidonu side to take home the trophy. The Tuvili Cinavi Trophy was donated by former Raiwaqa and national basketball rep Jo Toroca, who resides in the USA. RBPA official Saula Koroi said the standard of competition had moved up a level. Koroi said even though they had finished a couple of rounds of competition, they still had new teams wanting to join their competition. "Some teams have been calling us wanting to join our competition and I believe this is good because it will bring more competition for our association," Koroi said. Koroi said new champions Waidonu will take on the Apenisa Tuimabualau-captained G Unit team in the next challenge next week. Bad weather experienced in Suva yesterday saw a lot of teams failing to make it to the courts for their matches. In other games, McPacers defeated Veterans 40-22, Warriors 40- Mighty Mights 28 while Golden Bati edged Chosen 33-30 in the only women's game.
