Crossroads win tourney

CROSSROADS won the Sky Tech Raiwaqa Inter-lane Basketball Tournament after an epic finale at Ed's Court in Raiwaqa over the weekend. The Peniasi Kainamoli and Malakai Ravai-led side beat Jazz 36-34 in a closely contested affair. Former Fiji reps played an instrumental part alongside national under-20 player Josua Koka.

Raiwaqa Basketball Association president Saula Koroi said the competition and enthusiasm level of the participants over the last three weeks was impressive. He said the revival of inter-lane format after five years was a successful initiative. "I'm really impressed with the outcome of this tournament. The competition level in the past three weeks has been outstanding," Koroi said.

"Not only this tournament helped the participating teams lift their performance level but also helped the association in its development program." The Raiwaqa Inter-lane tournament featured current, former and age group national reps playing for the streets they live in. The 12 teams registered in this knockout tournament had at least an elite player playing alongside aspiring national reps.

"This tournament didn't only bring the players together but the whole community and all the people who came to see the tournament really had a great time," Koroi said. Crossroads beat Bryceland 36-11 while Jazz beat Eroni Cinavilekaba and Jo Kuboutawa led Spowart 33-28 in the semi-final matches.

Crossroads won the Cinavilakeba Trophy plus $300 in prize-money while Jazz settled for $100.

Koroi said the weekly league competition would begin this Saturday with teams challenging Crosswords for the Cinavilakeba Trophy.
