Basketball a winner

Warriors and Sparks are the new winners for the 2011 Fiji Bitter Easter Basketball Championships at the Vodafone Arena yesterday.

Sparks dethroned defending champions Seini Dobui’s Wed C 31-26 in the women’s final while Warriors defeated Barbarians 41- 27 in the men’s.

Fiji Basketball media officer Laisiasa Puamau said the competition yesterday was tough.

“It was good watching the competition getting very competitive this year. The knockout rounds were interesting, the interest from all participating teams was just wonderful,” Puamau said.

Leonard Whippy’s Saints team was bundled out in the semifinals by Barbarians 43-40.

Puamau said other club teams are finally bridging the gap with other big teams like Saints and Wed C. That shows how the level of competition has really improved.

“The small club teams have really improved with their performance and that simply shows the development of basketball.”

Puamau acknowledges the sponsors and partners for the games.

“We would like to acknowledge Foster’s Group for their financial support, Communications Fiji Limited and our partners Fiji Police Force for providing us with their band at the opening ceremony and their tight security during the tournament and STOP HIV programme for educating athletes on the HIV AIDS topic,” Puamau said.
