Selection door still open

THE door is still open for basketball players who want to make the team to the Pacific Games. They can impress selectors at the Fiji Bitter-sponsored Easter Basketball Championship which starts tonight at the Vodafone Arena.

National women's and men's coaches Paul and Michael Whippy will keep a close eye on new players to strengthen their bid to defending the gold medal in New Caledonia.

Fiji is the current gold medal champions and the Easter championship is an opportunity for upcoming players who want to don the national jumper to impress those that matter.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said the biggest basketball tournament in the country would set the platform for Fiji's gold medal defence in New Caledonia.

"The selection door is still open to players that want to play for Fiji at the Pacific Games. It is a perfect opportunity where they can break into the national team."

"But players have to impress the national coach for the next five days," Puamau said.

He said both coaches had their squad members but potential players could be drafted in to compete for a spot in the national team.
