Tiyana makes her dad proud

Former national basketball rep Peniasi Kainamoli believes his daughter Tiyana will do well for the Oceania All-Stars team. The team plays at the Australian Country Cup later this month.
Tiyana, 14, has already proved her worth being a member of the National Under-16 team and U19 team together with her elder sister Donnis Kainamoli during the Pacific Youth Games in Melbourne, Australia last month.
The Dravuni, Tailevu, lass has made it into the Oceania All Stars team and father Peniasi is proud of her following his footsteps. “I’m very proud of her being one of the youngest player in the team,” Peniasi said. “She always tries to do her best, she’s a dedicated player and treats her school work and game seriously.” Tiyana played netball earlier on but was told to switch to basketball by her dad.
“I asked her to switch to basketball because I know she has the making of a good basketball player. Tiyana is a form three student of Saint Joseph’s Secondary School.
“I always remind her to balance her studies and basketball but always tell her that education comes first.”
Meanwhile, Tiyana says she is very happy to join the Oceania All Stars team. “I’m really excited that we will be playing together with our friends from other Pacific island countries. “I want to thank my family, my grandparents for their support.”
Basketball Fiji’s development officer Laisiasa Puamau, who is also the All Stars women’s coach, said Tiyana  selection is testimony to a strong family support system, hard work and dedication.
“If Tiyana continues to improve and grow, one can only imagine what lies ahead of her.”
