Team ready for Pacific's best

BASKETBALL Fiji president Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua yesterday presented the national men's and women's basketball sides with their uniforms for the Oceania Pacific Championships in Wellington, New Zealand next week.

Naivalurua is the president of Basketball Fiji and also inspired the two teams with his words after training yesterday at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

The team departs for New Zealand tomorrow and Basketball Fiji development officer and national women's coach Laisiasa Puamau said they were thankful to Naivalurua for motivating the players.

"He is a very inspirational speaker and his words will surely motivate the players for the tournament," he said.

Women's team captain Dale Wise Sauqaqa said they were looking forward to competing against the best teams in the Pacific.

The side will be up against teams such as Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and New Caledonia.

"Our first game will be against New Caledonia which beat us in the semi-finals in 2011," she said.

"We have been doing our homework and they (New Caledonia) just like our team have a mixture of experienced and young players.

"New Caledonia has just completed two tours overseas prior to this competition so we can expect a tough encounter from them."
