Yat Sen upsets Marist to win U19 opener

YAT Sen Secondary School under-19 team caused the upset of the Suva Secondary Schools Basketball competition when it downed Marist Brothers' High School 16-11.

Playing on their home court on Friday, Yat Sen kicked off their campaign on a high note, sending a stern warning to other schools, that they'll be a force to reckon with.

Defending U19 Fiji secondary school champion, MBHS will need to regroup before playing the next game.

The boys from Flagstaff struggled to find their rhythm but showed glimpses of potential at times.

Basketball Fiji development officer Catherine Grawich said the opening round was full of exciting games.

"It's a good start to the competition," she said.

"Yat Sen's U19 victory is a bit of an upset of the round and I believe there will be more of these types of games in the future."

She said Yat Sen was at the top of its game. She said MBHS would definitely bounce back in the competition.

"It's only the start of competition, I believe Marist will really bounce back in the future."

Meanwhile, in a bid to fight non-communical diseases, Basketball Fiji volunteers helped out the "Hoops for Health" program.

She said Basketball Fiji volunteers helped out with the secondary schools games and coaching clinics had been implemented to promote healthy lifestyle messages into their training.
