NBDO MEETS WITH LAUTOKA LORD MAYOR AND TOWN CLERK

Our NBDO also discussed with the Lord Mayor and Town Clerk, the need for some maintenance work on the Lautoka multi-purpose courts.  The present condition of the playing surface on the 4 courts is poor, however,  the Council do have plans to improve the surface by repainting it.  An American company currently in Lautoka doing work on the Robin Mitchell Tennis Centre will be asked to make a quotation on the necessary work on the multi-purpose courts and the Council will then assess the ways of obtaining the funds to do so.  Fanny advised that Basketball Fiji would also investigate means of finding some funding to assist this project and suggested that it the other sports that use the complex for competitions (namely volleyball and netball) were to do the same, the funds might be more readily available.  It is likely that this maintenance work will not happen until next year, however, Mr Kumar and Mr Raj both expressed a desire to have the work completed as soon as possible.

The current condition of the basketball rings and backboards was also raised and Mr Raj said that the council work staff could make the necessary repairs and would do so soon.

The rapport between the Council and the Lautoka Basketball Association seems to be quite good and Simi Cagilaba (Lautoka Association Secretary) often meets with the Council employees to seek assistance with court bookings and necessary work.

With the introduction of junior basketball in Lautoka, the need to have the availability of courts in good condition is a must to ensuring safe sporting venues for the players.

The present operation of the multi-purpose courts for the various sports is based on a system suggested by the Fiji Sports Council some years ago and currently allows for certain periods of the year to be allocated to each sport as "their season".  Fanny suggested that some modifications to this scheme could allow sports to utilise the courts on a more frequent basis and offered to forward some suggestions that might allow for a greater utilisation of the court time and enable sports to have longer term competitions.
