IT COULD ONLY HAPPEN IN FIJI!!!

Only a small crowd was on hand to witness the start of last night's game due to a violent electrical storm that hit Suva some one and a half hours prior to game time, however they were treated to an exciting first quarter.

Just 5 minutes and 10 seconds into the second quarter the power blacked out and with no power by 11.00pm the coaches agreed to abandon the game, as the Basketball Fiji members on hand were aware that no venue was available for the game to be continued on Friday evening .

After a slow start, Fiji starters Helen Roden, Valerie Nainima, Mikaelar Whippy, Letava Whippy and Aggie Tuilevuka managed to find some rhythm and by half way through the first quarter had established a lead of 13 points.  Wellington point guard, Sezen Mercan, kept her team in touch with tenacious offence and defence.

Coach Whippy used a different 6 locally based players in this game in order that he could get a look at all players before making his final team selection for the Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Madrid in June.  Before the game was abandoned he managed to get 4 of them on to the court, but now is faced with a dilema of how to get all players into the third and final game.

With just these three games for Coach Whippy to see his players in action against a quality women's team before going to Madrid, he went to bed not a happy man about having to abandon one of them, but when he woke this morning to the news that FEA would cut all power to all of Suva for most of Saturday, therefore causing the cancellation of the third game, he was devastated.

However, the thrid game will go ahead at 8.30am on Saturday at the Vodafone Arena.  The early start will ensure that the game can be completed before the power is cut off.  Immediately this news was released everyone went into action contacting the radio stations, the press, the TV station, and sending out emails, and of course spreading the message by word of mouth.  With all of the latest technology in the world, the "coconut wireless" still works best here in Fiji.
