WOMEN IN SPORT PROGRAM A HUGE SUCCESS

To walk into Vodafone and see 200 plus young girls running around and having so much fun and enjoyment was a sight to behold.  All were presented with a T-shirt in either red, blue or yellow and this added to the colourful spectacle.

Fanny arranged for buses to transport children from 3 schools to Vodafone Arena to ensure attendance and the children welcomed the opportunity to participate.  Teachers from the schools also attended and quickly seeing the benefit of such a program, requested for something like this to be ongoing.

Basketball Fiji will now conduct an afternoon competition for these 3 schools at the covered court at Veiuto Primary School each afternoon of the 2 weeks school vacation starting today (Monday).

The 210 primary children who attended from 1-3pm each day had a short skill session and then went immediately into games.  Basketball Fiji organised sets of bibs and the members of the National Women’s and the National Youth Squads came to assist with officiating.  Water breaks were taken frequently from large containers and individual cups.  The young players soon got the idea of playing basketball and several showed outstanding athletic ability and have been already identified for next year’s Junior Development Program.

The secondary students were much less in numbers but 22 took the opportunity to try basketball (although a few had already played before).  The real fun time was for the “older ladies” who came from 6-8pm each day and the squeals and laughter could be heard outside the stadium.

And the challenge for Basketball Fiji to find a way to keep these ladies involved has quickly been addressed and a Wednesday night competition will kick off at the Raiwai Court from next week.  This night of social games should be the ideal environment for these ladies to continue to have some fun.

Basketball Fiji is extremely grateful to Mr Dennis Rounds from the Australian High Commission for his support for the program.  The Women in Sport Program is just the thing to kick start more involvement of women in basketball here in Fiji.
