Suva Secondary Schools Basketball Competition

The Suva Secondary Preliminary Basketball Competition is onto the ninth round of competition that features three age groups: U15, U17 & U19 grades for both the boys and girls. Due to the large number of teams competitions are played on Thursdays and Fridays of each week @ 5 seprate venues from 3.30pm to 5.15pm. The game venues are Latter Day Saints Technical College basketball gym, International Secondary Schools Gym, Yat Sen Secondary Schools Basketball Hall, Indian College and Eds court, Raiwaqa.

The 10 round preliminary competition will end on the 14th August, 2009. The aim of the competition is to give students and teams much needed game experience before the National Secondary Schools Basketball Championships scheduled for the 24th -27th August. In the under 15 girls division the Laucala Bay Secondary School basketball team is beginning to make waves in the competition beating traditional basketball schools LDS (Leading the points table), International and Saint Joseph. However they are yet to play Yat Sen which will give them a fair idea on where their skill levels are at.

In the U15 boys Marist Brothers & International seem to be the team to beat with Yat Sen & Gospel providing stiff competition. In the U17 girls Latter Day Saints and Indian College seem to be in class of their own. However as the rounds continue the other schools are beginning to pick up and beginning to gage in on the competition. In the U17 boys defending champs Marist Brothers continues to stamp there dominance however they should be facing stiff competition from a skillful Latter Day Saints outfit and a well trained Indian College side.

In the U19 grades for both boys and girls will be the most competitive grades with all 8 teams having an equal chance to win the tournament. At the moment it is hard to identify the favourites as there has been mixed results.

The aim of the preliminary competition is to provide the partcipants with a platform and self esteem before the tournament. We believe that through organising a preliminary competition will lift the stardard of basketball not only in the National Secondary Schools Championships but throughout Fiji.
