Basketball break

Any opportunity to represent Fiji is a privilege for me,' says Valerie Nainima. After successful stint for her South Carolina in the USA, the 24-years-old player returns to her country for a month break. "I've been here for only a week and was able to catch a glimpse of basketball in Fiji by watching pickup games throughout the week in Raiwaqa,' she said. "Also the three on three tournament held in Raiwaqa on Saturday. "I love every moment I spend with my fellow players. With regards to the development of basketball in Fiji, the former national women's rep said she was very impressed with how much effort is put into the younger kids. "I know that there is development in the Suva and Raiwaqa area on the weekends and this is a huge growth for Basketball Fiji.

"I am also happy there are basketball competitions after the Easter Games. "Before, the basketball season in Fiji ended with the Easter Games and I truly believe this restricted the development of many players in the country. "To see that Laisiasa Puamau and Basketball Fiji are having tournaments after Easter is very promising to the development of the sport in Fiji and would most definitely increase the opportunity for younger players to gain scholarships or contracts overseas." Nainima said there is a lot of room for improvement with regards to the level of basketball played in the country. "Having said that I know there is a lack of financial support and facilities.

"But with continuous competitions I know that the level of basketball will get better," she added. When asked on her successes in the US, Nainima replied that living a balanced life and trusting God to take care of everything is her strength on the battlefield during her studies in the US. And she reminded the young players to believe in themselves, work hard, manage time well and listen to your parents. "However, I want to also tell them that this is not easy but keep striving,' she added.
