Basketball Fiji Development Officer scoops Pacific Administrator Award

Basketball Fiji's Development Officer/ Administrator Laisiasa Puamau was named the Pacific Administrator of the Year at the 2010/2011 Pacific Sports Awards in Noumea, New Caledonia.

The awards ceremony was held in Noumea on Sunday (4th September).

The nominees from different countries included:

Outstanding Sports Administrator of the Year

Nominees: Alister STEVIC (Cricket, COOK ISLANDS), Laisiasa PUAMAU (Basketball, FIJI), Bill LEANE (Cricket, PNG), Charles VILLIERME (PGA/Va’a/Kayak, TAHITI)

Laisiasa's  enthusiasm and love for the sport however saw him take on the challenges and through his hard work, perseverance and initiative he was able to run Basketball Fiji’s development program and achieve many of the objectives set by the federation in just his first year. Today he continues to try to do more with the little funds Basketball Fiji is able to find and give him. Through his work also basketball has gained recognition in Fiji and also around the pacific. In the year 2010 Basketball Fiji’s website had an average hit of 280 hits per day which was designed and updated by this hard working young man and it’s also now one of the “highest hit” sites in Oceania Basketball. In February 2010 Basketball Fiji received a request from FIBA Oceania Secretary General Steve Smith, to release Laisiasa possibly 2-3 times in the year to help the Nauru basketball federation conduct their basketball programs. Basketball Fiji feels that this request from FIBA Oceania confirms the confidence we and they have for this young man.

In addition to his achievements, Laisiasa was selected out of several applicants to be the sole nominee from the Oceania Region to attend the International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program which was held in the US from the 30th September to 13th November, 2010. Basketball Fiji was very proud when it was announced that he had graduated from this Program with honors.

Laisiasa put on hold his studies for a law degree to take up the NBDO role.  He came into the position with no administrative or formal education in setting programs, implementing changes and doing all the work he has done to date. All that he has managed to achieve to date has been achieved from his love for the sport, what he has learnt from experience with senior coaches, as a national U20 coach, as a national player, communicating with people knowledgeable about the sport and from the internet.  Laisiasa also supports the social responsibilities of the sporting community and is a current FASANOC STOP HIV Champion.

In 2010 Laisiasa was named the Fiji Sports Administrator of the Year. Basketball Fiji and FASANOC are proud to nominate this young man as the PGC’s Outstanding Sports Administrator of the Year.
