Raiwaqa host Under-18 tourney

The Raiwaqa Basketball Association hosted a three round Kauvesi League tournament at the Ed’s Court in Raiwaqa yesterday.

The tournament was sponsored by the family of the late Suva City Lord mayor Jone Kauvesi who had migrated overseas.

Raiwaqa president Saula Koroi said the tournament was for development.

“The tournament is for the development of Raiwaqa basketball and we are thankful to the Kauvesi family for sponsoring the tournament for coming up with the idea of development in this area,” Koroi said.

“They were in the former Raiwaqa neighborhood and we acknowledge them for their assistance.”

The tournament is a no-zone defence game but a man to man defence game.

“We have seen great competition from these Under-18 players,” he said.

“They have displayed very skilled defensive games and good techniques. We know this tournament will not only assist Raiwaqa basketball but Fiji Basketball as a whole,” Koroi said.

Some of the top contenders in the competition included Roses, Chosen and Mighty Mights.

Organisers will stage a premier competition in two week’s time.

The final round of the Kauvesi League will be next week and the winner will receive the Kauvesi Trophy and a $200 cash prizemoney while the runner up will receive 15 movie vouchers.
