School ready for challenge

DEFENDING girl’s under-17 basketball champion Yat Sen Secondary School prefers the underdog tags heading into the Fiji Secondary School Basketball Championship at the end of the month.

YSSS will face tough challengers from teams like Saint Joseph’s Secondary School and Suva Grammar School at the Tuckers Ice-Cream sponsored event.

YSSS have played four games in the Suva Basketball League, winning two games. Team manager Nia Nawalu Khan said they do not want to pressure the girls on defending the title.

“Most of these girls are new to this level so we are not expecting much from them but we are urging them to give their best shot. This is totally a new team from last year so we are just looking forward to the game,” she said.

“Some of them have been playing volleyball all this time. So playing at this level will be a huge test for them.”

Meanwhile the team’s uniforms have been sponsored by the parents for each of the six teams. YSSS is competing in three boys and girls teams.

“We have a total of six teams (three boys and three girls) competing in the national event. We are preparing well for the championship, we know it is going to be difficult to defend the U17 title but we are ready for it,” Khan said.

“This week we are not playing any games since we are having exams but we will resume our training on Friday,” Khan said.
