Clinics for children

THE Raiwaqa basketball association is holding a coaching clinic for their young players as they focus their attention on the development of the sport for children in the area.

Coaching clinic organiser and national Under-20 coach Saula Koroi said they believed the only way they could produce good basketball players for the future was by developing players at a very young age.

Koroi said children involved in their clinics range from eight to 17 years of age.

The former national rep said he had learnt a lot from the trip he made with the national teams to the Oceania championships in Australia last year especially as to how young aspiring basketball players are developed.

"What I'm trying to do here is just to pass on what I've learnt from Australia especially to help our young players," Koroi said.

"The best way to teach and develop players is when they are at this age (8-17 years) as they will be able to learn very quickly.

"We have been running this clinic for the past two weeks and the response from children in the area has been very good."

Koroi said he had roped in players from the men's and women's under-20 teams to help out in conducting the coaching clinics.

"It's very easy for these young children to work with players from the national under-20 teams as they also quickly set goals by trying to follow footsteps of the young national reps," Koroi said. The clinic is held daily at Ed's court in Raiwaqa.
