Koyamainavure shines in US

When Milika Koyamainavure walked into Hodges Fieldhouse for her first day of practice with the Iowa Central women’s basketball team, head coach Craig Carlson knows the Fijian import is going to be a hit.Carlson said Koyamainavure is a dedicated player who works hard to achieve her goal.“We knew she was athletic and a good player,” Carlson said. “But there is so much outside of basketball to deal with players moving halfway across the world as you don’t know how they are going to adjust, “Needless to say we have been pleasantly surprised with her development. “Koyamainavure has been a major part of Iowa Central’s season. To date, the Tritons are 12-4 overall and are receiving votes to be ranked nationally in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division Two Women’s Basketball poll. “She is the Tritons’ third leading scorer with 8.2 points per game and is shooting 42 per cent from the field. She leads the team in steals at 2.2 per game and is second in rebounds with 5.1 per game.“Mili is a strong rebounder and her best asset is offensive rebounding which has helped her Tritons team a lot. “I think that Mili has just scratched the surface as far as how good she can be. We are counting on her to make continual progress and help our very young team win games down the stretch.”
Basketball Fiji’s development officer Laisiasa Puamau says Mili is one who is well respected amongst her peers and is great role models to young aspiring female basketballers who want attain a basketball scholarship to further their education and basketball in American.
“In addition Basketball Fiji would like to acknowledge Oceania National Committee and Iowa Central College for investing in Koyamainavure as with the opportunity and exposure will add strength to Basketball Fiji’s women’s programme,” Puamau said.
