In-coming President Shipley's Fiji Inspection

On his maiden Federation visit in his capacity as in-coming President of FIBA Oceania, Burton Shipley was joined by FIBA Oceania staff David Crocker and Amanda Jenkins as the trio met with local officials to discuss the progress in the preparations for the FIBA Oceania U19 Championships being conducted in Suva during December 2014. "My confidence is high that Fiji are organising a memorable event here in Suva. Major General Naivalurua, as President of Fiji Basketball is leading a very skilled team to pull together what will be an excellent event. They have a clear centre of gravity in their management of Basketball Fiji with the preparation phase well underway. FIBA Oceania will visit again on 20 October to inspect the facility to see that it is ready for the December event" said in-coming President Shipley.

Mr Shipley also met with key sports officials in Fiji including the Head of the Sports Commission and Sports Council Peter Mazey, acting Fiji Olympic Committee President Jerome Kado, President of the Pacific Games Council Vidhya Lakhan and Oceania Olympic Committee Executive Director Dennis Miller to continue discussions on outlying the plans that FIBA Oceania holds for the region including changes to the competition qualification system, continued evolution of the National Basketball Development Officer program and the U19 FIBA Oceania Championships to be hosted in Fiji.

Fiji is to host the best male and female U19 players from nine other countries from 1-8 December in Suva as they battle it out for the right to play in the World U19 Championships in 2015. Vodafone Arena will be the centre of the action with University of South Pacific accommodating the 300 players and officials.
