Wise to monitor players

FIJI basketball under-19 women's coach Dale Wise will closely monitor the 24-member Eastern squad was named after the national trials yesterday at the FMF gymnasium.

While Wise was pleased with the raw talents, displayed by the 28 trialists, she feels more work is needed to be done as Fiji prepares to hosts its first FIBA Oceania Basketball U19 Championships in Suva at the end of the year.

She said conditioning the girls to the required standard would be the prime objective, starting on day one tomorrow.

"I'm very pleased with what I saw," she said.

"The girls showed some good stuff but we will need to build more on what they have showed. We need to work on our fitness, court conditioning, basic skills, improving our tactical knowledge of the game."

She said she would work with fitness and conditioning coaches at the University of the South Pacific to condition the girls.

"From now onwards, I will be monitoring these girls and that includes their commitment at training."

Wise has already selected her Western squad last week and would be under the watchful eyes of Basketball Fiji's development officers in the Western Division.

The national women's basketball rep will name her final squad in September before the Oceania event in December.
