Vodafone Arena gets an overhaul in lead up to competition

Preparations toward the upgrade of the Vodafone Arena are reaching their final stages as part of the $159k Memorandum of Understanding between Basketball Fiji and the Fiji Sports Council. The overhaul of the arena to reach international standards was agreed upon to assist with readiness for the Basketball Federation of Fiji to host the 2014 FIBA-USP Under 19 Oceania Basketball Championship.

Yesterday Basketball Fiji oversaw the marking of the courts. “The president of the Raiwaqa Basketball Players Association and his team went down to the Vodafone Arena to assist with measuring and putting down the lines to ensure they were at international standard,” Basketball Development Officer Catherine Grawich commented.

“Having sanded back the boards and revarnished the surface, the courts are looking fantastic and the players are very keen to get out there and try them out.”

The teams were able to fulfil that wish yesterday when Basketball Fiji used the short window of Arena availability between the end of USP exams and another booking at the arena to go through a rehearsal run through. Both the BLK-Fiji National U19 teams took to the newly renovated courts to scrimmage against past national representatives and other senior players.

“It’s a good opportunity for the young athletes to see what it’s like playing against more experienced players,” Grawich said.

The BLK-Fiji National U19 Teams will take to the courts for real from the 1st of December where they will be taking on teams from Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Guam, Tahiti, American Samoa, Samoa, PNG and the Solomon Islands.

Tickets are just $3 and children enter for free.
