Fiji U19 on final phase of b'ball preparations

THE BLK Fiji under-19 women's side is in the final phase of the preparation for the FIBA Oceania U19 Championship to be held next month.

Coach Dale Wise said they were down to final 12 players from which two would be named in the reserves.

She said they had a very young team with the youngest player still in primary school.

"We initially started with 40 girls and reduced to 20. The team is very young and the youngest player in the side is 13 years old," Wise said.

"This team has been chosen based on their commitment which has been very encouraging for Basketball Fiji and its future. The average age in this team is 15."

Wise said experienced Tiana Kainamoli would lead the team in the championship.

"She is the most experienced player, making her debut couple years ago and was also part of the senior team that toured New Zealand."

Wise added the team was working on its set piece play and defence.
