MORE STAFF JOIN THE NATIONAL WOMEN'S SQUAD

Long time National Weigthlifting and Strength Coach, Della Shaw, has joined forces with the coaching staff of the National Women's Squad and has taken over the strength program.  Della has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program and has already altered the program to involve more variety and make the work more interesting for the players.  The Fiji Sports Council have generously given free membership to the squad players for the Hyundai Fitness Gym and sessions are held each Tuesday and Thursday from 5.00 - 6.30am with free weighrts and machines.

Della has also changed the Saturday morning session to the Aquatic Center where the players go through a core strength program before a recovery session in the pool.  Coach Michael Whippy was so impressed with the work that Della did with the voleyball squad for the Pacific Games in Samoa last year that he approached her to assist our basketball players to get ready for the Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Madrid, Spain in June this year.

Soon the Women's program will be enhanced by a number of Sports Science students from USP who will take over the supervision and recording of the conditioning program and provide immediate analysis to Coach Whippy.  These students will also conduct the various fitness tests and advise Coach Whippy of changes required in the program for individual players.  In addition the students will review the various recording charts that the players fill in daily and analyse these for reporting to Coach Whippy.

Currently Basketball Fiji is negotiating with the FASANOC Medical Commission for the appointment of an honorary doctor and physiotherapist to join the team.  This will allow for a constant relationship between coach and medicall staff for the treatment and rehabilitation of any injuries to players.

Basketball Fiji is moving a long way forward from the past situation of having just a coach and manager to look after the team.  Even Squad Manager, Deb Hazelman is getting some assistants to help her in her very busy schedule.
