MEN AND WOMEN’S NATIONAL BASKETBALL TEAM TO LAUNCH OPEN TRAINING CAMP

(Mangilao, GUAM) – Monday, January 9th, 2012 – Newly appointed Men and Women’s National Basketball Team Head Coaches, EJ Calvo and Tony Thompson, are wasting no time getting started with an Open Training Camp for the Men and Women’s Basketball Program starting on Thursday, January 12th, to be held at the FD Phoenix Center in Mangilao at 7pm.

All interested players 18 and older are welcome to attend in order to seek enrollment in the National Basketball Program. If under 18 years of age, players are required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian at this initial workout in order to approve participation and sign waivers. According to Calvo, “The Men’s program will be training and competing both on and off island in 2012, and we’re looking for the best. We have a core team coming back, but will be looking for some new young talent that may contribute to the success of the program.” Calvo added, “If a player is looking to challenge himself and compete internationally at the highest level, our program is the place to be.”

Guam Basketball will be competing in the upcoming Friendship Tournament in June 2012; as well as the East Asian Games in October of 2013 against some of the best teams in Asia, including China, Japan, & South Korea.

According to Calvo, training will initially consist of a good deal of plyometric techniques and conditioning, with a cross-training program similar to Cross-Fit. “We’re always going to be a smaller team, so we need to be tougher than our opponents, both mentally and physically…and our training program will focus on what it will take to win on the international level.”

If unable to attend this initial meeting & workout for any reason, all interested players are encouraged to contact the Guam Basketball Confederation & Head Coach in order to be considered.

The Guam National Basketball Teams are organized and managed by the Guam Basketball Confederation (GBC). GBC oversees development of the sport and National Programs from 6 years of age to the adult level in regards to international representation of the island. GBC is also the only recognized organization to represent and compete internationally in FIBA. FIBA is the Federal International Basketball Association which is the governing body for world basketball.
