Guam Men’s Basketball named Outstanding Team of the 15th Pacific Games

Team Guam's campaign at the 15th Pacific Games ended on a high note as Guam Men’s Basketball was named the outstanding team of the 15th Pacific Games.  Team Guam’s Chef de Mission Joey Miranda III received the plaque commemorating the achievement from Pacific Games Council Executive Director Andrew Minogue.

A panel of judges was tasked to choose awards from nominated members for categories such as Outstanding Male and Female Athlete and Team of the Games.  The Male Athlete of the Games was awarded to Ryan Pini of Papua New Guinea who set six records during the swimming competition while Lara Grangeon of New Caledonia was chosen as Female athlete of the games for breaking her own records set in the previous games in ten different events of the swimming competition.

According to Minogue, “the team was chosen because of their superb performance during the games which led to their Gold Medal victory.”

Although the Team dropped its first game against Tahiti and struggled against Fiji winning with a last second three pointer in overtime, the Team was able to gel through the next series of pool play as they steamrolled over the competition.  A lopsided victory over host Papua New Guinea, revenge on Tahiti in the quarterfinals and the dismantling of Fiji in the championship game all played a factor in the decision to award the team with the trophy.
