Jaguars drub Slashers, 118-80
J-Trading Jaguars displayed their deadly defense as they went on to drub Palau Ilonggo Association (PIA) Slashers, 118-80 Sunday to earn a semifinals spot in the 2009 Filipino Basketball League (FBL) at the Palau National gym.
After taking a 50-45 lead at the end of the first half, the Jaguars led by the team of playing coach George Domingo, Gener Aguinaldo, Jun de Lina, Jun Lanzuela and gentle giant Phillip Maniago went to their man-to-man defense as they forced the Slashers from one turnover to another and managed to outscore the latter with an 32-19 out to established an 82-64 advantage going into the last canto.
In the fourth quarter, it was all business for the Jaguars as they stayed with their defense and pulled away for the win and earned the last spot in the semifinals with Aguinaldo leading the scoring chores with 20 points while Lanzuela added 19.
On the other hand, the Slashers tried to trim down the lead but did not have enough gas to sustain their momentum as they bowed out of the league despite the 19-point performance of Jojo Marino.
In other games, Western Union defeated Rams Ballers, 97-79; Surangel and Sons won over Hanpa Cardinals, 81-66; and Rangers showed might over the Ilocandia Bulls, 78-63.
With the win, the Jaguars will face league leader Western Union in a best-of-three semis match while defending champion Surangel and Sons will take on team Rangers in the other semis game slated on October 4 at the same venue.
The tournament is supervised by the Palau Basketball Federation (PBF) and sponsored by Pinoy Express and Remittance, WCTC, Aqua Water, Print Zone, PITI, Palau Royal Resort, ATT Bar and Restaurant, CTSI Logistics and Shimbros International.
