MICRO GAMES WRAP UP

Guam men’s and women’s teams were far stronger than any of their competitors and while the men had some close games against RMI, Palau and Pohnpei, they always seemed to be in control of their destiny.  Guam women have some excellent players who should make a name for themselves at the college level.  Most agreed that these were the best Guam teams seen in Micronesian in a long time.

The big improvers in the men’s division were RMI, Pohnpei and Chuuk, while CNMI, Palau and Kosrae were about even with previous performances.  In the women CNMI and RMI have improved while Palau was about the same as before and the Chuuk women’s team, while very young and inexperienced, showed that they could become a threat in the future.

The tournament went through without many hiccups and the spectators came in force to cheer on their teams.  The atmosphere in the gym at times was exciting (and loud!).

The resurfaced floor in the gym stood up to the rigours of daily use and proved a worthwhile investment.  The table officials proved to be competent and the volunteers on floor detail did an excellent job throughout.

The only disappointment was the standard of the referees and while some countries/states did not send any referees or less than required, Palau was forced to add several to the referee‘s roster.  The inconsistency of the referees caused most coaches to “gnash” their teeth but in the end the games got played.  The area of referee development is one that the Micronesian Basketball Confederation will need to address in light of the several new competitions now planned for the future.

To all players, coaches, officials and volunteers who helped make the basketball tournament such a huge success, we at Basketball Palau say  a “BIG”   -  KMAL  MESULANG!!
